Description
Age is derived from date of birth of the main claimant taken from source data. Age is recorded in years as at one of the following (for the relevant dataset): registration date, clearance date, caseload date, award review registration date or award review clearance date.
Individuals are classified as “Below State Pension Age” or “State Pension Age” based on their age and the date on which they become eligible for their State Pension - this is calculated based on age and gender.
The age at which women become eligible for their State Pension gradually increased from 60 to 65 between April 2010 and November 2018. Under current legislation, State Pension age for men and women is planned to increase over subsequent years. More information is available here.
If date of birth or gender information is missing in the source data then State Pension Age will be classified as Unknown.

Quality Statement
The age of claimant is derived from the date of birth of the main claimant. Date of birth is recorded as part of the PIP claim process. It is possible that errors can occur in the recording of date of birth. An age derived from date of birth which is under 16 is recoded to unknown / missing.
